The Rotterdam Film Festival’s audience is split on Maja Miloš’ Clip film and whether it’s an exploitative nightmare or a revelation. The film is dark, very sexually explicit and shot entirely on cellphone cameras by the actors. The actors are all 14, 15 and 16 years old.“The film shows very explicit sex acts as a matter-of-fact part of the teens’ lives,” and since they’re minors, the 28-year-old director is semi-getting away with it by assuring that “We used body doubles, prostheses, effects. We had it really planned.” We see she’s mining some risque territories with her slew of eager “actors” — oh so shockingly drinking, drugging, sexing it up a backdrop of modern day Serbia’s vast social problems. The lo-fi POV medium itself is intriguing. It’s when the director shoots herself mugging at the camera through her dramatically draped hair, it gets a little cringe-worthy. And then she says shit like this: “I tried to work with 18- and 19-year-olds and that was just a completely different generation. They didn’t give me that rawness. When I just saw the 14-and 15-year-olds, I knew that was where my film was. They are really fresh. They have real life examples in their surroundings, they knew what the film was about.”Yes, there’s nothing weird about a 28-year-old broad hanging around tweens who are rubbing their thonged asses at each other. Nothing at all… As far as the pornographic nature of the film? “For me it would be pornographic NOT to show that.” All concerned cringing aside, it could actually be an emotionally devastating revelation of brutal reality and bold film-making. Not so sure about that US release though. Related: Life and Death of a Porno Gang, A Serbian Film More... |

Too often I see an artist releasing a new mass produced screenprint, pulled by a large print house, and with little or no input from the artist themselves. As a result, I rather enjoy seeing the process an artist goes through to produce a piece of work, be it print or original. It is almost refreshing. Recently Remi/Rough team up with David Shillinglaw in David’s north London studio to paint this lovely colab canvas. And whilst doing so, posed for a few nice photos of them at work… Check out more shots and the finished piece after the jump… Photos by Joanna Dudderidge and Remi/Rough. Leon Reid IV and Julia Marchesi have teamed up for Reid’s latest project: The Hundred Story House. It’s a sculpture designed to house free books at a park in Brooklyn’s Cobble Hill Park. The idea is that the sculpture will function as free library on an honor-system. People can take books or leave them, and the sculpture could be a place where people know they can find great books to read for free. But Leon and Julia need $13,000 to make their vision happen, so they have gone to Kickstarter in the hope of raising that money. Here’s their pitch:
So far, they’ve raised about 13% of their goal, and they have 28 days to go. To support The Hundred Story House or learn more, check out the Kickstarter page. RJ Rushmore for Vandalog |Permalink |No comments More... |

$$$$$$$ Hello artists. I am a high school teacher now living in Seattle (recently relocated from NYC). We are buying a house and I am finally ready to support the great artists of the streets. We are looking for a relatively large (3'x3' or larger) piece of art to buy. We love swoon, banksy, basquiat, and all the big names but want and can only afford to support an up and coming artist. Our budget is $500. Wheatpasteing, stenciling, paint is all good, but perhaps something that can be rolled and shipped to seattle would work best. Send any pics ...

If you’re going to paste something, it might as well cover the floor of an empty, ancient, 160-foot long open air pool in Paris, right? French Los Angeles-based artist Mambo honors the 83-year-old pool complex that has been closed and swimming in graffiti since 1989 and will be destroyed this year with a giant, giant pasted collage. The Piscine Molitor was inaugurated by Olympic swimming champ Johnny Weissmuller a.k.a. Tarzan in 1929. Since closure, the gigantic art-deco complex was reborn as a popular spot for graffiti and street art. Since it’s going to be turned into a swanky resort-like complex in a $85 dollar renovation project, the building’s functional and recent history will be buffed away. With some strategically pasted cartoon-orange rolls for limbs, face, gut, and popping drop-shadows, Mambo renders the giant protruding Johnny “swimming” in the concrete. Take a good look. It won’t last the year. More... |

OFF CANVAS – Ben Eine from Studio Stare on Vimeo.
In October 2011, Converse proposed an unconventional approach to support China’s first-ever Design Week launching in Beijing. Converse created “OFF CANVAS”, a street-level exhibition of typography featuring six international and local artists notorious for their artistry of words. Culling from the diverse worlds of graphic design, art, and graffiti, the installations revealed communities and canvases where China’s emerging scenes in indie music, art, fashion and skate are based. How did Dutch artist Leon Keer create a 3D illusion on a*street in chalk? The same way they created perspective in Renaissance Florence The wife of 15th-century Italian artist Paolo Uccello used to beg him to come to bed. She was fed up of him staying up all night drawing objects with the new method of 3D illusion – or as it was called at the time, "perspective". He still wouldn't come to bed. "This perspective is such a sweet thing," he said. Uccello's obsession lives again in the street art of Leon Keer. At a recent chalk art festival, this Dutch artist drew a meticulously planned picture of a "terracotta army" of Lego figures on a street in Sarasota, Florida. After the ethereal white outlines were filled in with earth-coloured paints, it looked as if an army of Lego people (based on China's famous terracotta warriors) had been excavated by archaeologists right in the middle of this American town. The hole and the outsized toys look three-dimensional and solid – if you are standing in the right position. Photographs of the work show that from the "wrong" position, the picture looks smeared and distorted, a brown blur. Only when you stand at the correct viewing point is the illusion perfect, and then it is very convincing indeed. The first chalk design, seen from this viewpoint, seemed to float in mid-air above the road. Finished, the painting seems to go down into the ground in a hole made in the street. How does it work? It relies on exactly the same calculations that fascinated Uccello and his contemporaries in Renaissance Florence. If you decide on the viewing point of a picture – the place where the observer stands or sits – you can then plot how everything in that person's view will recede and elongate as it gets further away. The simple fact that further objects seem smaller can be used to create an illusory world if you plan the relative proportions of everything in your picture on a grid like the one Keer drew on to the street. Lots of trick effects arise from this principle. Hans Holbein's painting The Ambassadors is meant to be looked at from a few feet in front – except for one object that just seems to be a black-and-white smear from this angle but is actually a skull, best viewed from a point to the right of the painting and very close to its surface plane. Another trick is trompe l'oeil decoration, where you paint a fake window or sculpture high on a building so that it seems real from the ground. Ceiling paintings that seem to depict entire crowds of heavenly beings sitting on clouds use the same methods. So does this amazing street picture. Computers enable artists to calculate such effects with new precision – just as they enable 3D film-makers to achieve similar illusions. But all these modern wonders go back to the Renaissance when the closest thing to a computer was a set-square. The science improves. The locations change from churches and palaces to cinema screens and street surfaces. Our capacity for wonder lives on. ![]() Phil Lumbang is the first American to have a show at Newcastle’s Unit 44 gallery. Lumbang is known for his cartoon characters like his trademark bear, his work with The Hundreds and for being an assistant to Shepard Fairey. Even people (and I sometimes include myself in this category) who usually get sick and tired of the artists who build their brands based on repetitive logos might enjoy Lumbang. Unlike Shepard Fairey or D*face for example, Lumbang’s characters may be repetitive but they are also fun and a bit heartwarming. Who could say “no” to a mural that just tries to make people smile? We spotted some new street work this afternoon from London based artist Mobstr. Recently the street artist has been installing wooden 'A boards' spray painted with various text based messages. The first piece to appear on the streets chained to a lampost, was the "Temporary Pointless Sign" pictured above and located close to Old Street Station. Earlier today saw us stumbled upon another two pieces on Commercial Street in East London. The set of 'A boards' both feature the same message which reads 'Sign Pointing You back This Way - 100m' with the one pictured above, painted black with white text and the other painted white with black text, both a 100m apart with arrows pointing in opposite directions, creating a sort of endless loop as in this 'Endless' video created by Mobstr. Alongside these new 'A Board' pieces the artist has been hitting the streets with a series of official looking warning style stickers similar to those commonly seen on electrical boxes, lamposts and other such street furniture. The one pictured is the first one we have spotted, if you our readers see any more let us know!See some previously featured work from Mobstr posted on Hookedblog here.Hookedbloghttp://www.hookedblog.co.uk More... |

When we print our limited editions, 50 of these actually go into distribution. We never know which country, city or shop they are going to end up in but, like the famous golden tickets, they are out there waiting to be found.
We had an email last week from a very happy guy in Scotland who had strolled into his local retailer; Fat Buddha, only to find a limited edition VNA 17 on the shelves for the measly sum of £5! There was also someone who found an issue 16 signed by Invader in their local retailer, and who knows how many others have been found that we haven’t heard about. If you’ve found one, let us know, we’d love to hear about it! So, they are out there, and you may be lucky enough to find one. ![]() ![]() More... |

![]() Street art is moving online. If you’re a regular reader, you’ve probably noticed that street artists are making art on the street for the purpose of photographing it and sharing the images online (and maybe you remember these posts). I think it is too early to say for sure whether this transition is a good thing, a bad thing or just change, but it has gotten so pervasive that street art that comments on street art now often focuses on pointing out this transition from in-the-flesh street art to art that was intended to be shared digitally. Here are a few recent examples… 1. Reblog This by mobstr (shown above). This piece was painted in Shoreditch, a spot where it would have been seen by countless street art photographers, but it only lasted 7 hours before getting buffed. No matter. Mobstr got a great photo of it and put that photo online. Now it’s all ready to be reblogged on tumblr. ![]() 2. What ever happened to street art on the street? by Lush. Both a comment on the proliferation of street art online and the commercialization of the movement. This image is available as a print at Backwoods Gallery. Lush has also made animated gifs of his work, something else that can only be viewed digitally but is created on the street. ![]() 3. Fine by Elfo. The text is in Italian and references this work by Giuseppe Chiari. It translates to “Street art is finished, stop all together.” Rather than painting this in a busy city center, Elfo put it on an abandoned building in what looks like the countryside. The audience for the work is (primarily) the audience that will see this photo online and Elfo is well aware of that. Does this mean the death of street art though? Of course not. Chiari continued making art after his declaration, and Elfo has already made more street art. It’s just that Elfo’s public is primarily a digital one, either seeking his work out or coming across it randomly on a site like tumblr, but either way viewing it for free. For more about this shift towards a digital street and a digital public, here are two posts I wrote a while ago. These “hand-raised” pigeons are confined to India’s National Academy of Fine Art gallery, perching on the copper “branches” of a sculpture rigged with radio transistors. As they hop, scamper and shit about, they tweak the white noise filling the room. Animal rights groups aren’t happy with the arrangement.Expert veterinarians insist that Bangalore-based Naveen Thomas’ white art noise “can affect the birds’ hearing and homing abilities.” Surely, that plucks your heartstrings. Or not. Maybe you don’t recognize pigeons for the intelligent, loyal, vulnerable feathered creatures that they are. Fine. But does this sound right? “I find it interesting to hear how the sound fluctuates every time a bird sits on the copper wire… I’m treating the birds better than they were treated where they had come from. I would even use a monkey if I could.”Right then. In that spirit, excuse me while I rescue a pound dog to shoot it for my snuff film. Or not. More... |

We have almost reached the end of the month and we haven't had the opportunity yet to post a photographic round -up of what we have been seeing on the streets of East London, so here it is!It looks like a return to the streets from Paul Insect with his large scale baby head paste-ups and baby head stickers starting to re-appear on the streets. James Cochran aka JimmyC has been busy the last month painting a number of new murals in his signature style including the one pictured above and this one. Nathan Bowen repaints this shutter on Commercial Street with some of his scratchy gremlin like characters causing havok in a fish and chip shop! We have no idea who has redecorated this grey concrete bollard just off Brick Lane but we like it alot. 2011 was a big year for artist Pablo Delgado with the artist populating the streets throughout the year with his miniature street art scenes. The artist has kick started a new year with some new additions to the streets, the piece pictured above being the first of these pieces we have found. If anyone sees anymore new pieces let us know. If you still want more street art, take a look at some of our previous posts:Hookedblog London Street Art — 24 Featuring work from A.ce, Malarky, Dom, Pablo Delgado & Michael DeFeo. Hookedblog London Street Art — 23 Featuring work from Malarky, Stik, Haculla, Lister, EMA. ![]() This new piece, located in Bogota, was based on*this portrait by photographer Brett Walker. The stenciling style is a bit darker than what Stink usually does, but it’s an interesting marriage between Stinkfish’s distinctive brightness and Brett Walker‘s characteristic high-contrast darkness. ![]() Photos by Stinkfish and Brett Walker Caroline Caldwell for Vandalog |Permalink |No comments More... |

Jason Bard Yarmosky explores the relationship between the limitations of social norms and freedom of expression, particularly the juxtaposition between the young and old. The raw freedom that is so much a part of youth often gives way to borders and boundaries placed on adult behavior. As we transition from adult to elderly, these raw freedoms often reemerge. As a child you learn to walk; later in life we learn to unwalk, literally and metaphorically. The dreams of the young, often sublimated by the years, never really disappear..."

Christopher Conn Askew's work is a joy to behold. His colour pallette of red, black, greys and blues works so well with his theatrical illustrations and paintings. There is a definite influence from his early days of tattooing and I think he has nailed the 'other-world' genre on the head...

![]() As expected, Skewville‘s latest show looks like it kicks ass. Playground Tactics is on now through February 4th at White Walls Gallery in San Fransisco and the Skewville twins have once again put together a perfect combination of smaller drawings, paintings, sculptures and large installation work. It’s playful, but what better way to do art about a playground? Curbs and Stoops have pics of the installation, and here are some of the paintings, drawings and smaller sculptures… Also, Factory Fresh in Bushwick is hosting a retrospective of Skewville’s work next month. Skewville’s 80th Birthday: A Retro Retrospective opens on February 3rd and runs through March 11th. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Photos courtesy of White Walls Gallery RJ Rushmore for Vandalog | Permalink | No comments More... |

“Still Life” is an interactive art piece by Scott Garner. “Years ago, I had the idea of a still life painting that wasn’t so still, but could never quite wrap my head around how to build it. After various experiments and explorations, I settled on Unity 3D as the ideal tool to make it happen,” [...]

![]() ![]() ![]() These are all animated gifs, gents, so click and see ‘em giggle into the 3rd dimension! Cool trinket. Poor bears. The new Stereogranimator at the New York Public Library site lets you peruse an archive of nearly 40,000 historical stereographs, variously upsetting in nature, and merge the “doubleeyed” “twin pictures” into animated gifs using a step by step instructional, sure to amuse you and usurp your productivity for the morn. Oops. Or you can make 3D anaglyphs. Slap on some 3D glasses. Enjoy the view. Laugh at 1800′s Jersey girls’ bathing suits. Ha! Ha. Ah-ha.More... |
